The Green One +

E&C’s debut album, The Green One (1991) is extended in 2021 with 15 live songs recorded during the Green One Tour.

Elephant & Castle’s debut album, The Green One, was recorded in May 1991 at Studio Robespierre in Saint-Ouen (suburbs of Paris). The six tracks of these demo tapes were supposed to canvass record companies. The Ugum label published them. Despite a few production flaws, The Green One leaves an impression of maturity. With its musical coherence, amazing sense of melody and vocal artistry, Elephant & Castle live up to their reputation. Stein capers around with rage, sensitivity, passion and intensity on short and effective songs carried out by a cohesive band. The Green One is full of promises.

The Green One new version is extended with 15 live songs recorded during the Green One Tour in 1992. This Live is the opportunity to hear some previously unreleased tracks (The Call, Disappear, Ten O’Clock, Ego’s Song), or the three heroic live classics (Bombs, Le 14-Juillet du Tiers d’Homme and Squat) which always surprised and amazed the audience. Thanks to this new release, the fans will rediscover the passion that made the legend of Elephant and Castle.
Those live tracks, mostly recorded at the end of 1992, are the last by Elephant &Castle as a quintet. A few days later, R.P.P. Hennequin left the band. End of the chapter.

Highly underrated (neo) progressive band from France. Very melodic but also powerful with a funny pop-like approach and a nice singer. The Green One is worth checking out if you're into...well all comparisons fail somehow... Maybe early Jadis but with humour, maybe some IQ.

Elephant & Castle is one of the most obscure neo prog bands ever came from France. They've had a short career with one album released in 1991 on small french label who doesn't exist anymore UGUM, responsable for issuing bands like Abel Ganz or Comedy of Errors among others. The music is in vein of IQ or Machiavel, neo prog not of the highest calibre but pleasent most of the time. The album also is very short only 6 pieces all clocking around 30 min, not very much instrumental passages, but the ones who existed here are ok. I like the voice of Steinberger specialy on opening track Between Now And Then. Elephant & Castle were trying to capture the beautiful smothness of neo prog of the '80's as bands done in that period like IQ, Marillion and Abel Ganz, not entirely succeded. All in all 3 stars for this one not bad not something special either, very intristing cover art.

Die ersten fünf Stücke sind neo-prog-pop-Songs, deren Melodien sich durchaus tief in die zuhörenden Gehörgängen einzunisten in der Lage sind. Ein Vergleich, ein Vergleich? Mir fällt so recht keiner ein. E&C schufen eine CD, die geistig sicherlich anders gemeint war, jedoch zur prima Persiflage geriet. The Game of the Goose ist zwar das Epos des Mini-Albums, fällt gegenüber seinen Vorgängern deutlich ab: es ist zu ernst!

La musique d'Elephant & Castle est bien du progressif mais passé par le traitement d'une personnalité musicale originale. Le groupe faite preuve d'un sens mélodique d'une grande originalité. Il jongle avec différents styles pour fabriquer un cocktail musical explosif. Un It Bites made in France. Il règne également une excellente cohésion et une grande complicité entre les musiciens dont se dégage une maturité. Il y a surtout Stein un phénomène vocal qui cabriole avec rage et sensibilité, avec passion et ferveur sur plusieurs octaves. Sur No Time No Rhyme, ce chanteur accomplit un numéro de diva folle façon Freddie Mercury.

Elephant & Castle est le groupe qui répond à la critique adressée par Best et Hervé Picard aux groupes français de progressif qui font "passer l'ouvrage avant la rage". les morceaux sont courts, les thèmes ne se répètent pas, les musiciens ne se lancent pas dans des solos interminables. la musique est ramassée pour n'aboutir à aucun moment de vide, d'ennui ou d'inutile. La musique d'Elephant & Castle est une concentration de fougue rock et de subtilité progressive, menée par un chanteur dont le charisme lui permet de s'affirmer comme un très grand digne de Peter Gabriel.

Il existe en France un rock progressif à l'anglaise : Elephant & Castle en est le brillant représentant. Le groupe possède le don rare d'aller à l'essentiel, sans fioritures. Le style est direct, franc, les mélodies belles, simples. La voix rageuse et évocatrice de Stein fait penser à celle de Peter Nicholls (IQ). Elle laisse transparaitre l'émotion et renforce la personnalité musicale du groupe.

Ce qui est fascinant chez Elephant & Castle, c'est sa faculté de dire en quatre minutes ce que d'autres diraient en dix. Sa musique est un concentré d'énergie progressive. Tous ses titres sont des tubes en puissance. Elephant & Castle a inventé la musique qui devrait ouvrir les portes des radios au rock progressif.

The Green One a des allures proches d'IQ saupoudré de Saga dans une atmosphère Genesis. Six titres concis et bien construits à la production soignée à commencer par le tube potentiel Between Now and Then où le chanteur fait preuve là, comme ailleurs, d'un talent manifeste. les musiciens assurent la toile sonore dans une cohésion parfaite. Un album prometteur d'un groupe plein d'avenir.

If you like the idea of a bizarre IQ meets Cardiacs type sound, the Elephant & Castle is for you. The band experiments  with all kinds of weird time signature's and changes. It's not always smooth and at time it's a bit disconcerting. But, hell, it works. Stein sings about real life, not the wishy washy fantasy crap that so many iffy prog bands are guilty off. Elephant & Castle are very proggie and far more interesting in arrangements and sounds than most. Forward with originality and not plagurism.
